Alan Alda, Spokesman for Science
A big part of Science & Society is helping scientists and experts in STEM communicate their work to the rest of the world. Alan Alda, the actor best known for his work in M*A*S*H, has emerged as a strong advocate for science communication and improving public understanding of science. He was the host of Scientific Frontiers on PBS for many years and has founded the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stoneybrook University. According to its website “After interviewing hundreds of scientists, Mr. Alda became convinced that many researchers have wonderful stories to tell, but some need help in telling them.” He now works with scientists to use improvisational theater to improve communication skills. His most recent challenge was to encourage scientists to try to explain color to an 11-year-old. He discusses his mission in a video interview with the New York Times.
