Understanding the nature of dark matter (DM) is the Holy Grail for most particle physicists. Over the last decade, DM detection technologies have reached sensitivities at unprecedented levels, such that new sources of backgrounds need to be addressed. For example, the Coherent Neutrino Scattering (CEvNS) will constitute an irreducible background called the “neutrino floor” for all DM experiments. Currently, there is no way to distinguish between nuclear recoils from DM and CEvNS.
After giving an overview of the current challenges of direct DM detection, Dr. Scholberg will present the potential capability to add the directionality channel in the NEWS-G experiment and Superheated liquids detectors to go beyond the “neutrino floor’.
