What do we see when we look at a weather map, a graph tracking COVID-19 infections, or a basketball player’s shot chart? Data visualization has never been more popular, more powerful, or potentially more misleading. Duke sociologist Kieran Healy explores why some visualizations are better than others, why good ones are so useful, and why honesty isn’t necessarily something we can recognize just by looking.
Periodic Tables is an informal science gathering during which invited speakers share interesting, relevant science to the general public in an engaging and interactive way. Admission is free, but a donation of $5 or more will help offset the cost of the venue and guest presenters. All ticket sales go toward supporting the program.
