Polio’s Ukranian comeback?
Ukraine is back in the news, but this time it is not for deepening tensions with Russia or for the latest on its newly deposed heavyweight boxing champ, Wladimir Klitschko. The headlines this go-around are perhaps the most alarming of all—Ukraine has reported two cases of polio, the first by a European country since 2010.
Dispatches from the Global Polio Eradication Initiativez and the World Health Organization describe two cases of polio occurring in children—ages 10 months and four years—from the southwest part of Ukraine.
