The Science and the Public Certificate Program

…is interdisciplinary: The program focuses on understanding the impact of science and technology on society. It equips students from any major with the skills to understand the ethical, policy, and societal implications of scientific and technological developments.

…evolves as science evolves: We keep the curriculum and course content nimble to address new and shifting challenges, whether in gene editing, AI, climate change, or science denialism. Our goal is to prepare students to engage with cutting-edge technologies and their societal impacts and responses in real time.

…experiential: Each SatP Certificate student chooses two research experiences. These can include working in a wet lab, a dry lab, a policy setting, a independent study, Bass Connections, Applied Ethics+ (or any of the “+” programs), DukeEngage in Washington, DC, or internships that students identify on their own. Seniors finish he program with a capstone project working with an external client under the direction of the Certificate Director.

>> More About the Program

“Looking back at my time at Duke, I can confidently say that the courses I took for the Science and the Public Certificate were among the most influential classes I took in undergrad. Not only did they shape me into being a more intentional writer, the topics of science communication and patient advocacy have been central to my path towards medical school. Ultimately, my time with the Science and the Public certificate has shaped my values as a future physician and reinforced the importance of working towards a more equitable medical system.”
