Periodic Tables: How do Lava Flow Fields Grow? W/ Arianna Soldati

January 23, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. @ the Night School Bar in Durham
When we look at an inactive volcanic landscape, a recent, solidified, black lava flow often stands out like a monolith. But observing an active eruption reveals a much more complex history of overlapping flows, sudden breakouts, and direction changes. In this talk we will explore how this fascinating process unfolds.

Arianna Soldati is an Assistant Professor in Volcanology at North Carolina State University. Her lab group combines field and experimental work to investigate the dynamics of effusive eruptions. She received her Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Missouri – Columbia, where she specialized in lava flow rheology, i.e. how far and how fast can lava flow. She is also passionate about science communication—public speaking, outreach, and writing for outlets like Scientific American, National Geographic, and CNN, among others.
