A broken heart. A dagger through the heart. Shot in the heart. Scarred, crushed, wounded. Would heartbreak by any other name be any less agonizing?
“We use these strange words that if somebody really did it to you … it would really be painful,” says Mark Leary, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke University. In his work, he’s found that the words people use for hurt feelings refer to physically painful experiences—across at least 14 languages.
