In 2016, the US Special Counsel’s report found that Russia interfered with the US presidential election. Steps have been taken since then to secure our voting infrastructure, online political advertising, and social media, but more can be done. Should we be more concerned about voting machines being hacked, or about foreign-sponsored groups conducting misinformation and influence campaigns on Facebook? And were Russian hackers targeting a company supplying Durham County voting machines in 2016?

Allison Berke teaches in the Initiative for Science & Society at Duke, is a research engineer in the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, directs strategy at LexisNexis, and researches cybersecurity, biosecurity, and the policy implications of cryptocurrencies.
