Sigma Xi Members are invited to attend the kick-off event for the introduction to state-level science policy series

About this Event
This event is designed by Sigma Xi to prepare researchers to participate in science policy at the state level. This series will focus on the North Carolina science policy network but will provide general information about science policy that will appeal to scientists nationwide.

The North Carolina Science & Technology Policy Fellowship is administered by NC Sea Grant. Get more background information on the fellowship.

The first event will occur on July 30th (1:30-4:30 pm) via Zoom.

The itinerary for the July 30th event is planned to be the following (details subject to change):

1) Sara Mirabilio, NC Sea Grant: Introduction to the Fellowship, Background on Fellows’ placements, Goals of the program

2) Jean Goodwin, NC State, Department of Communication: The mindset change from academia to policy, how policymaking is similar/different from research and teaching

3) Deborah Stine, Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy Analysis & Education, LLC: Basic skills and tools for policymaking: What do you need to know on day one of your policy fellowship? What is a policy memo? How to prepare for a policy briefing?

4) Amy Auth, Kelly Dockham, UNC Government Affairs, and Jeff Warren, NC Policy Collaboratory: 1) A discussion of state and federal advocacy, 2) A discussion on how scientists can use their expertise to shape policy as a career
