What is mental or psychological pain, and how does it relate to physical pain? Why do we often embrace medical treatments for physical pain yet treat psychological pain differently? How do our reactions reflect the way we think about mental and physical illness? In this roundtable discussion, Professor Jennie Hawkins and Professor Warren Kinghorn will consider how our society’s understanding of mental illness shapes our response to mental pain.
Warren Kinghorn, MD, ThD, is assistant professor of psychiatry and pastoral and moral theology within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Duke Divinity School. His work focuses on the care of persons with mental illness within religious communities, the philosophy of psychiatric diagnosis, moral dimensions of combat trauma, and theological approaches to mental health and human flourishing. Jennie Hawkins, PhD, is an associate research professor in the Department of Philosophy and an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine. Her work focuses on well-being, quality of life, and the nature of decision-making. Click here for the flyer.
